Off the Course

Whether its in the classroom, or in the community, members of the cross country team excel in more than just running.  The team can often be found out and about in the Winter Park community doing such tasks as competing in local races to helping the less fortunate.  Past events and awards include painting a habitat for humanity house, organizing a family fun run, making the Dean's and President's List, serving as class President, and running over 100 miles as a fund raiser.

Paralympic Runner visits Tars' cross country teams

As a special treat Paralympic runner Tim Willis worked out with the team.  Willis, who is blind, is able to run competitively due in large part to his high school coach, who     came up with the idea of using a shoestring to link Willis with a guide runner to escort him through the uneven terrain of cross country running.  Willis, 25, won four medals at the 1996 paralympics in Atlanta.

Tars Paint Habitat for Humanity House

After completing an early Saturday morning practice, the men's and women's cross country team gave back to the Winter Park community.  Members of the team set out to paint a Habitat for Humanity house.  Coach Long called the effort, "a team building experience and a great opportunity to help others."

Members compete in 1998 Disney Marathon

Coach Matt Long and running alumni Mike Cooper and Matt Williams competed in the 1998 Disney Marathon.  Months of training paid off as all three finished the 26.2 mile race in a respectable fashion.  Long, Cooper, and Williams ran most of the race together and had plenty of support from the Rollins community.
